Overview
Intracranial venous malformations are abnormal formations of veins within the brain that develop during fetal growth. These malformations are usually congenital and are often discovered incidentally during brain imaging for other conditions. In many cases, they do not cause symptoms and remain stable throughout life. However, certain types may be associated with neurological symptoms or complications depending on their size, location, and blood flow characteristics.
Symptoms
Many intracranial venous malformations cause no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include:

Causes
Intracranial venous malformations result from abnormal development of the brain’s venous system before birth. The exact reason for this abnormal development is unknown. These malformations are not typically inherited and are not caused by lifestyle or environmental factors after birth.
