Diagnosis

Diagnosing a jellyfish sting is usually straightforward and often does not require a visit to a healthcare provider. In most cases, the diagnosis is made based on the appearance of the sting and the symptoms experienced.

If you do seek medical attention, your healthcare provider can typically diagnose the sting by examining the affected area. They may also collect samples of any remaining stingers to help guide treatment and determine the type of jellyfish involved.

Treatment

Treatment for jellyfish stings includes both first-aid care and, in some cases, medical treatment depending on the severity of the reaction.

First-aid care
Most jellyfish stings can be treated at home using the following steps:

  • Carefully remove any visible tentacles using fine tweezers.

  • Soak the affected area in hot water, ideally between 110°F and 113°F (43°C to 45°C). The water should be hot but not scalding. Keep the area immersed or use a hot shower until the pain subsides, usually between 20 and 45 minutes.

  • Apply 0.5% to 1% hydrocortisone cream or ointment twice a day to reduce inflammation and itching.

Steps to avoid
Some actions can worsen symptoms or have no proven benefit, including:

  • Scraping out stingers

  • Rinsing with human urine

  • Using cold, fresh water

  • Applying meat tenderizer, alcohol, ethanol, or ammonia

  • Rubbing the area with a towel

  • Using pressure bandages

Medical treatment
In severe cases, medical attention may be necessary. Treatment options include:

  • Emergency care: Severe reactions, such as difficulty breathing or cardiac issues, may require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), life support, or antivenom for box jellyfish stings.

  • Oral medicine: Delayed rashes or skin reactions can be managed with oral antihistamines, corticosteroids, or pain-relieving medications.

  • Eye flushing: If the sting occurs on or near the eye, immediate medical care is essential to flush out toxins and manage pain.

Prompt and appropriate care helps relieve pain, prevent complications, and promote faster healing after a jellyfish sting.
