Overview

Diagnosis

Dengue fever is diagnosed based on clinical symptoms, medical history, and laboratory tests. Early diagnosis is important to monitor disease progression and prevent complications.

  • Review of symptoms such as high fever, body aches, headache, and rash

  • History of recent travel to or residence in dengue-endemic areas

  • Physical examination to assess dehydration, bleeding signs, or abdominal tenderness

  • Blood tests to detect dengue virus or antibodies

  • Complete blood count to monitor platelet levels and hematocrit

  • Tests to assess liver function in moderate to severe cases

Treatment

There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue fever. Management focuses on relieving symptoms and preventing complications through supportive care.

  • Adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration

  • Oral rehydration solutions or intravenous fluids in severe cases

  • Paracetamol for fever and pain relief

  • Close monitoring of platelet counts and vital signs

  • Hospitalization for warning signs such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or bleeding

  • Avoidance of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs due to bleeding risk

  • Rest and gradual return to normal activities during recovery
