Overview
Diagnosis
Doctors can often diagnose Ramsay Hunt syndrome by reviewing your medical history, performing a physical exam and observing its characteristic signs and symptoms. The presence of facial paralysis along with a painful rash in or around the ear is typically a strong indicator. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor may collect a sample of fluid from one of the ear blisters for laboratory testing.
Treatment
Prompt treatment is important to reduce pain and lower the risk of long-term complications. Several types of medications may be used to manage the condition:
-
Antiviral drugs such as acyclovir, famciclovir or valacyclovir may help fight the virus responsible for the infection.
-
Corticosteroids like prednisone may be prescribed for a short period to enhance the effectiveness of antiviral therapy.
-
Anti-anxiety medications, including diazepam, can help ease vertigo.
-
Prescription pain relievers may be necessary when the ear and facial pain becomes severe.
