Overview

Diagnosis

Stretch marks usually do not require a formal diagnosis. A healthcare professional may examine your skin and review your medical history to understand when the marks appeared and whether any health changes may be involved. If there is concern about elevated cortisol levels, additional tests may be recommended to rule out underlying conditions that might contribute to skin changes.

Treatment

Stretch marks are harmless and often fade naturally with time. Treatment is not required, but various options may help soften their appearance. These treatments can make stretch marks lighter or smoother, though they may not remove them completely, and no single method has proven consistently more effective than others.

Retinoid creams derived from vitamin A, such as tretinoin, may help with stretch marks that are less than a few months old. When effective, tretinoin supports collagen rebuilding, helping stretch marks resemble healthy skin more closely. However, it may irritate the skin, and anyone who is pregnant or nursing should consult a healthcare professional before using it.

Light and laser therapies may stimulate collagen formation or improve skin elasticity. A healthcare professional can recommend which type of light or laser approach is most suitable based on your skin and the age of the stretch marks.

Microneedling uses a device with tiny needles to trigger collagen production. It carries less risk of pigment changes compared with some laser therapies, making it a preferred option for people with darker skin tones.

Choosing the right treatment depends on several factors, including:

  • How long the stretch marks have been present

  • Your skin type and how it responds to procedures

  • Convenience, as some treatments require multiple clinic visits

  • Cost, because cosmetic therapies are often not covered by insurance

  • Your expectations regarding the results

Working with your healthcare professional can help you decide on the most suitable treatment or combination of treatments for your needs.
