Diagnosis

A healthcare professional can usually diagnose a stye simply by examining the eyelid. In some cases, a light and a magnifying device may be used for a closer look at the affected area.

Treatment

Most styes heal on their own without the need for specific treatment. Using warm compresses can help speed up the healing process, and it’s common for styes to recur.

When a stye does not go away on its own, additional treatment options may be considered, such as:

  • Antibiotics. A healthcare professional may prescribe antibiotic eye drops or a topical antibiotic cream. If the infection persists or spreads beyond the eyelid, antibiotics taken by mouth may be recommended.

  • Surgery to relieve pressure. If a stye remains despite other treatments, a healthcare professional may make a small cut to drain the pus and relieve discomfort.
