Overview

Diagnosis

A diagnosis of selective IgA deficiency is made through a blood test that measures immunoglobulin levels. IgA deficiency can be complete or partial.

Healthcare professionals may order an immunoglobulin blood test if you have experienced frequent or recurrent infections. This test can also be part of a broader panel of laboratory tests to diagnose or rule out other conditions.

Treatment

Treatment for selective IgA deficiency focuses on managing infections and preventing complications.

  • Antibiotics may be prescribed to treat bacterial infections as they occur.

  • In cases of long-term or recurrent illnesses, such as chronic bronchitis, preventive antibiotic therapy (antibiotic prophylaxis) may be recommended to reduce the risk of future infections.
